Green Days – portway handled flights in Madeira using 100% sustainable operations
For the first time in Portugal, 100% sustainable ground handling operations were carried out at an airport. The milestone took place at Madeira International Airport, where portway launched its Green Days initiative on 30 and 31 May. During these two days, several ground handling activities were performed with zero CO₂ emissions, marking another important step towards portway's sustainability goals of reducing CO₂ emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
Over the two-day initiative, portway provided fully sustainable ground handling services for seven airlines: easyJet, Edelweiss, Finnair, Jet2.com, Luxair, Transavia and Wizz Air.
The Green Days initiative highlights portway's commitment to decarbonisation as a strategic priority. As part of this commitment, the company has focused the vast majority of its investments at Portuguese airports on renewing its fleet with environmentally friendly equipment that produces zero CO₂ emissions.
Given the unique characteristics of Madeira Airport, where short operating distances make electric and manually operated equipment both practical and efficient while minimising environmental impact, portway has accelerated its investment in the region. Most recently, the company acquired an electric Ground Power Unit (GPU), enabling aircraft to be powered while parked without the use of fossil fuels. This investment has made it possible to deliver 100% sustainable ground handling operations.
Aligned with the VINCI Group's environmental policies, portway continues to invest in decarbonisation, making a significant contribution to the sustainability of both Madeira Airport and the island of Madeira.
