Every day, millions of animals, including dogs, cats, reptiles, birds and fish, are transported by air. As part of this process, it is our responsibility to ensure not only that these animals travel as comfortably as possible, but also that their journey is carried out in complete safety. As a ground handling provider, portway is equally committed to ensuring that its employees are trained in accordance with the highest industry standards and regulatory requirements.

As air transport is the safest and most humane option for moving animals over long distances, whether as checked baggage in the aircraft hold or as cargo, it is essential that all operational procedures are followed by every party involved.

The process begins with the animal's acceptance, during which the handling agent verifies the transport conditions, inspects the travel container and checks all required documentation. The container is then placed in a protected area to ensure suitable temperature conditions. It is transported to the aircraft using dedicated, clearly identified equipment before being loaded in accordance with the airline's procedures and loading instructions. Upon arrival, the same standards and procedures are applied throughout the unloading process.

The greatest challenges lie in safeguarding the welfare of each animal, recognising that every species has specific requirements, and ensuring that passengers and shippers fully understand the applicable regulations. At check-in, passengers may occasionally present transport containers that do not meet the required specifications, delaying the acceptance process until the issue is resolved. In cargo operations, one of the main challenges is ensuring that shippers comply with government regulations and the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) requirements governing the transport of protected wildlife.

Another daily challenge across airports is operational disruption. Flight delays or schedule changes can have a significant impact on animal transport, making effective communication between all parties essential to ensure the wellbeing of every animal in our care.
